Resilience and Emissions in Relation to Climate Change
Sanitation and climate: assessing resilience and emissions (SCARE), is a four-year project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We are working with local stakeholders, government, and policy makers. We will conduct field research and policy engagement will take place in South Asia (Nepal), East Africa (Ethiopia and Uganda), West Africa (Senegal).
Who we are
We are an international multi-disciplinary consortium of seven partner institutions. We are combining fundamental research into sanitation and climate to develop resilient and sustainable services that protect public health.
What we are doing
The SCARE project is developing a range of tools and methods for assessing emissions and resilience. As these are developed and tested, we will make these available on our website.
Understanding the issues in relation to sanitation and climate is critical for governments and policy makers to be able to make informed choices in trade-offs between reducing emissions and developing resilient and sustainable services that protect public health.
The key aspects of this research include:
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Our research aims to improve estimates of greenhouse gas emissions associated with on-site sanitation in urban areas and small towns. The results will help us to pinpoint technology and management options to effectively reduce emissions. These solutions form the basis to provide safe and reliable services that meet the needs of women and girls.
Resilient Sanitation Services
We are working to improve understanding of how to enhance the resilience of sanitation services, in relation to climate change and greenhouse gas reduction, in resource-limited settings.
Climate Products & Services
Making climate products and services more available and accessible, such as climate projections and data, for operational and policy decision-making in sanitation services in low- and middle-income countries.
