3rd edition of the symposium on “Science for Sustainable Development”
The École Polytechnique de Thiès organized the 3rd edition of the symposium on “Science for Sustainable Development” from January 19 to 20, 2024.
The symposium aims to bring together participants from the socio-professional world and the scientific and academic community to exchange views on how science can contribute to addressing today’s economic, social, and environmental challenges. The event is part of the annual scientific activities organized by École Polytechnique de Thiès (EPT). This symposium is particularly relevant to Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, as the region is experiencing a technological innovation boom and is in need of sustainable development solutions.
The 3rd edition featured plenary sessions, oral and poster sessions, and side events (workshops). The presenters were:
- researchers who either expressed interest in presenting their work or were selected by the organizing committee;
- heads of institutions or regions invited to present their experiences.
The presentation took place both in person and online.
Organizers held two panels: the first addressed the economic, environmental, and security issues related to oil exploitation in Senegal, while the second focused on sanitation and climate change in developing countries.
The Ecole Polytechnique de Thiès conducted two workshops as side events. The first workshop, part of the SCARE project, shared experiences about on-site sanitation technologies and management in Senegal. The SCARE team and key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors discussed their experiences, lessons learned, and strategies for advancing on-site sanitation systems. This workshop provided a platform to exchange information from the SCARE project and gather additional data from utilities, regulators, academia, practitioners, and service providers. The second workshop served as the kick-off ceremony for the Open Burning project.
